Release beta 2 of BBEdit HTML extensions corrects some bugs reported by
Kevin Altis <kevin@scic.intel.com> and Jek Kian Jin <kianjin@ncb.gov.sg>
(many thanks).
Fixed features are:
- the comment extension now puts a --> at the end of
commented line, not just >
- the header extension closes headers withn </Hn>, not </H>
And a new feature:
- the specials translation extension now gives you two choices:
translating eight bit characters and/or "special" characters
(<, >, &, and ") that must be quoted. Please note that you
should translate these special characters *before* inserting
any HTML tag that uses them.

BeachText.

What is BeachText?
++++++++++++++++++
BeachText is a DA TextEditor which allows to create and edit the
TeachText file with picture easily. It also allows egrep etc.
It can also deal with Japanese, and create a text file longer
than 32k.
Documentation is in Japanese only, but for most part, the operation
of the BeachText should be quite straight forward. At least,
I have never read them but I had no trouble^_^
This is freeware and is free to redistribute as long as you
keep all the file together and intact, and you don't make
any profit out of it.
Please note that I am not the author but just a content user.

Subject: [*] CD Coyote 1.0.1
CD Coyote is a program for CD-ROM drive users who listen to audio
CD's and has written disc information to CD Remote DA and wish to
make a TEXT file of that information. CD Coyote is FREE!
CD Coyote needs System 7 or later to run. You also need to have
CD Remote (or to be precise the CD Remote Programs file) to get
the information from.
Changes from the first release:
- Added to look for CD Remote Programs file from System folder too.
- Removed automatic saving if drag-and-drop is used.

Click, there it is! 1.0
copyright (c) 1993, by Richard C. Cardona Utilities Group, Austin, Tx, USA.
Shareware: US$5.00, free to all Capitol Macintosh User Group members.
Requires System 7.0, works with System 7 Pro
RAM footprint: 3k of system heap.
What does it do?
Click, there it is! is something Apple should have done in the open/save
dialog since the invention of the Multifinder. Have you ever wanted to
open/save a document into a place where the Finder already has a window
opened for it? A certain popular utilities package got it half right with
one of their components except they don't let you click on the Finder
window's title bar. Click, there it is! has no such restrictions. If you
see the window in the Finder you can instantly make that your current
folder simply by clicking on it. If want to select the desktop, simply
click on the desktop. If the open/save dialog should happen to obscure the
Finder window you are looking for, then simply drag it out of the way by
dragging it from any point along the frame!
Enjoy,
Richard Cardona

Subject: [*] ColorSwitch 2.1
Here's a copy of v2.1 of Andrew Welch's ColorSwitch Control Panel.
His description follows:
-- Derek
Version 2.1 allows you to selectively turn on/off either the Menu Bar
icon-menu and/or the modifier-keys popup menu, and has a few internal
changes for compatibility reasons.
ColorSwitch is a Control Panel that allows you to effortlessly switch
between the available color modes of any attached monitors. Instead
of the inconvenience of using the Monitors Control Panel every time
you want to switch between color modes, you can simply hold down the
ColorSwitch modifier keys and click anywhere on the monitor you want
to change. A menu will pop up listing the available color modes for
the monitor you clicked on; just select the color mode you want and
ColorSwitch will acquiesce.
Under System 7 or later, things are even easier: ColorSwitch installs
a Monitor icon-menu next to the Balloon Help menu, from which you can
simply choose the color mode you desire for your main monitor.
ColorSwitch comes in very handy for many day-to-day tasks. Certain
programs require that your monitor be set to a certain color mode in
order to run, and using the Monitors control panel every time you need
to switch color modes grows tiresome quickly. Your Macintosh will
also operate more quickly if you normally operate in black and white
mode, switching to a more colorful setting only when you need to.
ColorSwitch makes switching color modes so quick and convenient, you
will find yourself using it constantly to improve your quality of life
at the computer.
Once installed, ColorSwitch uses up 5K of memory.

Subject: [*] PowerNotes 2.1
PowerNotes is a Hypercard stack designed to be an electronic notebook for
students and researchers alike. Designed for use on a Powerbook (although
it will run on any Mac with a screen size of 640 x 400 or larger), it
organizes and stores information (ie, class notes, research notes,
diagrams, recipes, whatever), which can be textual or graphical in nature.
PowerNotes has various import and export functions. This stack is
exceptionally useful as an electronic notebook for students taking notes
directly onto their PowerBooks, or for researchers and experimenters who
need to keep track of experiments, projects, or information from primary
literature references.
What's new for Version 2.1?
* Outliner Button to rapidly prepare an outline of all topics and
subtopics in the stack (great for generating an instant syllabus!)
* Print Button provides formatted output of the entire contents of a given
card
* Textfile Button to allow for simple import and/or export of text between
an ascii file and PowerNotes
* Time and Date fields are customizable
* Minor Bug Fixes

Subject: [*] SaintEdit 1.1
Well it is finally here!
This is a major upgrade to SaintEdit there are a ton of new
features and many bug fixes, so please read the 1.1 release history!
SaintEdit is a System 7, squeaky clean, robust general purpose text
editor-not a word processor, not a page layout program, not a draw program.
Hidden behind the simple and intuitive user interface lies a rather complex
program representing years of work. I use it as a snazzy, efficient
replacement for Teach Text: Though it doesn't (yet) support graphics,
SaintEdit will read any text file and is loaded with features.
SaintEdit 1.1
- System 7 Savvy
- Multiple open windows
- Memory dependent file size limit (greater than 32K!)
- Extensive Undo/Redo support
- Safe file saving routines
- Extensive Search and replace
- Color Day/Night Settings (change background color too!)
- FastScrolls
- Drag and Drop any TEXT file
- Sleek Interface
- Printing Support
- Multiple Monitor Support
- Auto read UNIX and DOS files without messing with converters
- Save text files for Macintosh, UNIX, DOS, TeachText, TeachText
Read Only
- Speech Manager Support
- And much, much more!
Thank you for your support...

When you start your computer up, there's a short time after the Finder comes
up
that your Mac is still pretty busy in the background. It the period of time
that it takes for File Sharing to become fully active. If you stick in a
CD-ROM while file sharing is coming up, it becomes a mounted volume, and any
mounted volume becomes "shareable" when file sharing finally finishes coming
up. If you wait until file sharing is active, and then put your CD-ROM in,
it's not treated as a shareable volume.
You could kludge it by turning File Sharing off, unmounting your CD, and then
turning it back on, but there's a more elegant solution available at sumex.
This was discussed in I-M 11-196, and I'm pulling the quote directly from
there. This was suggested by mxh160@psu.edu (Matt X. Herbison):
Get the shareware "UnmountIt" from /info-mac/disk/UnmountIt.
It will turn off File Sharing, unmount the volume, then turn
File Sharing back on. A more complete explanation is in MacWorld,
October 1993, page 152.
There you go. Good luck!

From: Linger@starsys.laf.in.us (Ken Linger)
Subject: Apple, Intel, Ads, and Reality
Ok, its time to face the facts. I'll start by saying that until very
recently, I've been one of those making claims listed below.
Apple was first. The interface now used on almost any successful platform
is either theirs or a bastardization of it. The pointing device under the
palm of your left or right hand was used by Apple long before becoming
standard equipment with today's PCs. Sound input, digitized playback, and
built in music that doesn't sound like you're trying to create voice
synthesis with a toy piano were all exploited by Apple before Compaq
released their DeskPro 486 series.
But this is past. True, all this makes me proud to be a Mac owner, but the
fact is now, many people will buy the PCs that offer this before they buy a
Mac. Simply telling them the Mac did it first might get you an, "Oh?"
response but that's it.
Through a decade of creative advertising, enough people have PC type
computers so they will now keep buying them. After all, they invested so
much money on their 8086, they'd have to switch to Visicalc from Lotus if
they bought an Apple, so they'll upgrade to a 286, then a 386. Now they
can run Windows, but they really wouldn't want to yet but 3.0 changed all
that. Intel and Microsoft, through burst of smoke from which I'm still
coughing today, got us believing that if the code is poorly written and
things seem to take forever, we'll make the poorly written code run faster
with a faster machine (as opposed to optimizing it).
So I pose this challenge. We on Info-Mac seem to constantly prove to
ourselves that we made the right choice in computers. This is a pretty
safe place where you shouldn't meet too much opposition. How would you
convince these following people, though (keep in mind if you go into a
computer store not knowing what you want, you will leave with a PC; if you
know you want a Mac, that's what you'll end up with; sales people are funny
that way):
- Someone buying a computer for the first time. Has a PC at work (seems
nice--especially After Dark in Windows with those nice fish)
- A PC user. Bought their first PC way back when. The decision then was
tough between a Mac and PC but now that they have the PC, they like it a
lot better (of course, they're comparing their current PC to the 1984 Mac
128). Has lots of time and money invested in software and hardware,
especially several IDE hard drives and "hard cards." Windows is the
greatest thing.
- A PC user who buys the latest. Has Windows NT running on their Pentium
and thinks it is the Messiah.
How do you fight to Macs to those people? How would you talk to them? How
would you target them in an ad? We had Quicktime... first; we had a GUI...
first doesn't mean that much anymore. And, given a choice between a Compaq
with decent sound and voice inputs and a "similar" desktop Mac, the Compaq
will be a lot less. And, while Macs can run PC applications through things
like Soft PC [I'm not counting Orange PC just because you can also buy a
notebook and stick it next to your Quadra and run both at the same time
too] I'm not that impressed. On my 50 Mhz SE/30, Soft PC becomes just
bearable.
As an aside, we have those Compaqs at work and it seems that the sounds of
the early to mid 80s from the Mac freeware market have reaching the PCs (7
years later). Now PCs can play the sounds you had for a week and threw
out: Twilight Zone theme, Looney Toons, etc. Oh well.
Anyway, I'd be interested in valid pro-mac arguments because I deal with
the above type people on a daily basis.
Thanks for any responses or flames. No, really, I mean it.

Subject: AppleShare Server 3.01 privilages
I am running appleshare server 3.01 on a classic II. I have shared
a folder, and created a number of users. Guests are not allowed.
The privileges for this folder are completely open, that is, all privileges
enabled for owner, group, and any-user. I have checked "Make all enclosed
folders like this one" and clicked implicit when it asks about privilege
inheritence. (I have also tried explicit).
However, when a user logs in and creates a new folder, that folder's
privileges are only enabled for owner (that user). Isn't this new
folder supposed to inherit the privileges from the enclosing folder?
(The enclosing folder's privileges are enabled for everyone (owner, group,
any-user)).
Any ideas why new folders created by users are not inheriting privileges?
If I create a new folder on the server machine, privileges are inherited
correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much,

Subject: A Scriptable Finder...
When AppleScript first came out, I was very excited and purchased it.
Unfortunately, the low quantity of scriptable software was somewhat of a
disappointment, and FinderLib was buggy so I patiently waited for the
Scriptable Finder to arrive.
When I saw the AV's in the store and saw that they had the Dictionary
for the Finder, I again waited and purchased System 7 Pro as soon as it
came out.
Much to my dismay, there is not a single example anywhere on how to use
the commands for the Finder. . . I've tried again and again, and I still
can't even get it to Open a file! I searched the AppleScript disk, and
there was FinderLib again!
This is next to useless. I appreciate the people who have posted their
own AppleScript extensions for using Finder commands, but I was really
hoping to have the "Real McCoy". The Finder isn't scriptable, neither
is AppleMail. . . the only thing I can do is script a text editor! I
sorry, but Apple really left me cold with this one!
If anyone out there has figured out the proper syntax to use the Finder
commands, drop me a line. The Finder just ignores everything I try.
Thanks!

Well-meaning folks have been telling frustrated ftp'ers to try Gopher

Gopher connections are very difficult to get too. Busy messages are
more common than not, early in the day or late, weekdays, weekends,

current system is not simply victimized by a bunch of self-indulgent
greedheads: the traffic has just increased beyond the ability of
current systems to support it. UMICH is similarly hard to connect with;
and far from being a "mirror" of SUMEX-AIM has its own structure which
needs time to learn and negotiate. Are there any other gopherable
Mac software sites that are not similarly clogged up?

I am working with a professor at the University of Texas who is
running experiments involving the short-term memory of children for
strings of numbers presented in different ways (flashed on the screen,
sound only, flashed + sound) and reported by the subject in a couple ways
(orally, with touch screen). The experiment is given with a HC tool that
presents random strings, collects the subject responses, and writes the
responses to a file.
The professor now wants to do a new set of experiments involving
sound given either left, right, or both stereo channels. For this
new experiment, I will need some XCMD extensions that
will allow me to control the stereo channel the sound goes through. I'm
not really sure if the Mac has true stereo without additional hardware. I
believe we will be using a Quadra for the experiment.
If anyone knows what it takes to get control of left and right
stereo channels over the Mac with HyperCard--XCMD's and, if
necessary, add-on soundboards--please let me know.

Unfortunately, that was lack of experience talking! Jim Matthews

That makes great sense. I stand corrected! I appologize to the
folks at Dartmouth. Fetch is a great software tool and the problem,
as Jim described, is *not* unique to Fetch.
We are trying to find a DOS server that does support NLST so that

For those of you without MacWeek subscriptions, the columnist thought it

Yes, indeed. You can change the type/creator of the 2.0-to-2.01 updater

As a law student, I use Westlaw to download cases to my mac for printing.
Westlaw software will format the text as postscript so that the printout
is in multiple fonts and dual columns, etc.
I have had trouble getting this capability to work. I finally figured out
what was happening. During transmission, strings of characters are getting
lost. This causes there to be fewer characters in a line than postscript
is expecting and a postscript error is generated.
I use a 14.4 kBaud modem with all the bells and whistles. I'm wondering if
something is wrong with the way I've got compression, error-correction,
and/or flow-control set up. I have been using v.32, v.42, etc. along with
hardware flow-control. I thought I had a hardware-handshaking cable, but
now I've begun to wonder. Is there any way I can tell from software?
Should error-correction eliminate strings of missing characters? Finally,
am I barking up the wrong tree? As usual, the folks at Westlaw, as with
most other places, have no clue what makes a mac tick.
One more bit of info. My roommate is using the same software with the same
version of the system, same lw driver (8.0). The only difference is that
he is using an SE with a 2400 baud modem. We also print to the same
lwpro600. He does not get PS errors. I have also tried re-installing the
Westlaw software and that doesn't solve the problem. I have also check for
init conflicts. That is not the problem.
Please help me by responding directly to me. If anybody is interested in
the answer, drop me a line and I'll summarize to the net.

>Gnome@VM.Temple.edu or TempleVM.bitnet
We've found two ways to do this. At first, we set the AppleShare Prep
file the way we wanted it (no auto-mounts), and then lock that file in
the System folder. That stopped them from setting auto-mount, but
unfortunately every time you went to AppleShare to connect to anything,
it would beep at you and say it couldn't save your changes (even if you
HADN'T clicked any auto-mount boxes, or anything else).
Since that didn't work as well as we hoped, we have switched to using
RevRDist to replace the AppleShare Prep file whenever the one on the local
machine is newer than the one on our hard disk image. Since we have
RevRDist run at shutdown time (not startup time), anyone checking that box
will have their preferences file replaced as soon as they shut down.
By the way, I did all kinds of things in ResEdit to try to disable
that button. As I recall, you can create a static text field that sits on
top of the entire area where those check items are, and enable it, and it
will absorb MOST of the clicks in that region and prevent people from
being able to click those boxes. Unfortunately, in our case there were
more than 5 remote volumes they could mount to, so the scroll bar would
come up, and I couldn't stop it from absorbing clicks, and then the
whole click override stopped working. That might work though if you had
only a few remote mountable volumes.

You must set up an AppleShare File Server using the AppleShare File Server

But then I read the review "24-bit Color Graphics" in the February 1993 issue
of MacWorld (p 153). Their benchmark table show no real improvement between
the non accelerated and accelerated Apple boards: (+ 10% to + 20% for
low-level QuickDraw tests, at best +10% in real-world tests, even 6% slower
for horizontal scrolling). But the boards description claims Quickdraw
acceleration by a factor 5 to 30?
Where is the mistake?
On the board there are two slots for DRAM. The description is quite vague
about their purpose: some programs can use this memory to store "off display"
images. What programs know how to take advantage of this? Is it worth buying
the DRAM for it?
I intend to use this card for graphic applications such as FreeHand,
Illustrator, PageMaker and Photoshop, with images from Kodak CDs and from a
256 levels of grey scanner (HP Scanjet). Will this card really speed
operations of these tools?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
I'll post a summary of the answers to this group.

Subject: Laser Printer problem - help!
Can anyone help with a problem with a laser printer?
It's an OKI LaserLine 6 (Ricoh engine, same as GCC PLP and Epson 3500).
It has a new drum, new toner and new developer cartridge. Copy count is 9000.
The right-hand side of every page appears gray, as though there's not enough
toner getting to it. It's getting worse i.e. the transition from black to gray
is moving further to the left as time (and the copy count) goes on.
Apologies for posting to Info-Mac, but I am driving it from a Mac, and I

Subject: Low level SCSI utility needed...
Net-affectiandos [sic] might remember my having problems a while back with a
DEC hard disk which (still) won't spin up on its own when connected to a Mac.
Many kind people replied insisting that all I had to do was put a jumper (
somewhere) on the drive and that would tell it to spin up all by itself.
Well,
I've tried all possible jumpers (though only single jumpers- never multiple
jumpters in combination) and the thing just wont spin up (it does, however,
work just fine on a VAX-Station).
Anyway, according to DEC, we need a low level SCSI utility which would let us
send commands to set a bit representing the mode for spin-up. Alternatively
we could use a SCSI driver (if someone knew of one) which would set this bit,
but I think the former is more likely to exist.
So, anyone have any ideas where we might find such a beast? (We'll even pay

Subject: PopChar 2.6.2 & MacBench 1.0 conflict on 660av ("type 1" error)
One of my friends recently brought over his copy of MacBench 1.0 to see
how my new 660av performed. The application started fine and ran all
the tests with no problem. However, when I selected "About MacBench..."
>From the Apple Menu and then clicked on the window to release it,
MacBench "unexpectedly quit" with this error message:
The application "MacBench" has unexpectedly
quit, because an error of type 1 occurred.
If I tried to restart MacBench (or any other application for that
matter), one of two things would happen:
(1) the application would start up normally, or
(2) the application would start up, then "unexpectedly quit" with the
same "error of type 1" message.
I assumed it was an Extension problem, so I rebooted with Extensions off
and sure enough, I had no trouble closing the "About MacBench..."
screen. Then I removed all the non-Apple extensions, rebooted with
Extensions on, and everything was still okay. Finally, I started adding
Extensions and Control Panels back into their respective System folders,
and once I put PopChar 2.6.2 back in, the problem appeared again. I
took PopChar back out again, rebooted, and the problem went away.
I assume this is a problem with PopChar 2.6.2, and not MacBench, my
660av, or System 7.1. Has anyone else had similar problems or ever
gotten the "type 1 error" message?
What exactly is a "type 1 error", anyway?

Subject: Problem w/ Sys. 7 "Personal" Filesharing
I'd like to thank everyone for their responses to my problems about the
limit on System 7 "personal" filesharing and it's 10 workstation limit.
It's been a crash course in some details I need to master for my work with
the DOE grant for infusion of computer-supported collaborative learning
into two school communities. I'd like to sum up some of the things I've
learned:
System 7 permits "personal" filesharing of 10 computers w/ from
any single computer. I'd like to stress that this means that a classroom
in a technology rich school may have mini-LANS of 11 Macs without having
to shell out $400-$700+ for AppleShare Fileserver software. There IS a
place for such LANS in schools right now. CSILE, for instance, is
experimental software that has been used in schools since 1987 w/ 6-8
networked computers. Secondary teacher teams have shared the small
networks for "thematic" multidisicpinary projects.
There's a limited range of networking software to choose from.
AppleShare 3.0.1 with permit up to 25 workstations for a cost in the $400
range. For more, you need 4.0 which goes for $719, educational pricing.
Others pay over $1,100.
Jeff Carney was right: I was using At Ease, not Easy Access.
Teachers blanch at the prospect of managing a mini-LAN without
simply-managed security software, which may pose its own problems. I've
been lucky, but another researcher at our second high school has been
fighting apparent collisions between Daedalus at At Ease. I'd also like to
inform Jeff that Daedalus works with a client-server relationship with the
main Daedalus programs residing on each workstation. We haven't put it
through it's paces in the Classic II lab yet, but will as soon as we get
it fully networked.
Now our 20-station lab is split into two networks using the System
7 filesharing until we figure out how to get AppleShare (not allowed for
in the grant budget--ughh!)
Thank's again, All!

I would like to thank all the people who repsonded to what turned out

We are not really "Mac system"-wise here yet - we don't make a lot of
use of them at present, and most of our system experience is with Vaxes
and Unix boxes. So it is easy for us to overlook the obvious things
like 32-bit addressing. The user manual isn't too helpful in that respect
either. Now I now the answer I recall having read the problem several

Al -
This is easy to do, once you have all the pieces in place.
At work, you will need a modem to dial into (I recommend anything from Global
Village). This can either be connected directly to a Mac on the network, or
connected to a Shiva LANrover which is connected to the network. The latter,
in my experience, provides a more stable connection, but either way, once you
dial in with Remote Access you become a node on the office network. If you
have cc:Mail and Telnet installed on your home Mac you will be able to use
them
as if you were in the office (although they will be slower). You can download
>From one Mac to the other by enabling file sharing and mounting one machine
>From the other. You will also need to install Farallon's Timbuktu on your
Mac
at work and on your home Mac to be able to control one machine from the
other.
At home you will need another modem, and Remote Access must be installed on
your home Mac.
Good luck!

No, Hair. It means that the Rice mirror does not have as much space as
the sumex-aim master does. So Rice doesn't pick up anything earlier than
whatever date. Even if a file is after whatever date, it may not be inc-

Subject: Spreadsheet ---> FORTRAN input
I am trying to convert tab-delimited spreadsheet data to
format suitable for LS FORTRAN input. Spaces must fill in tabs
but each column must remain right-justified. (Shareware product
called Columnbo is designed for this but it
does not handle my long rows of data -- 500 characters each.)
Suggestions directly to bsen046@unlvm.unl.edu would be much
appreciated. Thank you.

Subject: StarStomer and a MOD editor
I submitted StarStormer 0.24 (not 32-bit clean) to the archives a week back,
and asked if anyone has seen a later version. Turns out, according to the
about box of a MOD-file editor/creator called the Player Pro beta 4.05 I'm
looking at, that StarStormer is up to version 2, at least.
Anyone out there know what the latest versions of the Player Pro and Star-
Stormer are, and do they have copies they can submit?

Since VERY long I have been complaining about all kinds of "unexpectedly
quits" in ALL versions of StuffIt DeLuxe (3.0.2 - 3.0.7)...
I feel that these kinds of problems occur most on 68000 Macs. Usually it
crashes on my PowerBook 100, and sometimes even the PowerBook crashes just
some time after I quit StuffIt. I feel that maybe the StuffIt engine, which
runs in the background, causes this...
I get the best results when I restart the Mac, and then start up StuffIt.
After using StuffIt I restart the Mac again, just to make sure StuffIt
does not leave any running processes behind...
Oh, the "unexpectedly quit" errors usually also freeze the Mac, which
means that I cannot press the OK button when this happens...
I'm still a registered user of StuffIt DeLuxe, but I'm not happy with it
AT ALL!

Hi there,
I've got a PowerBook 160 and am considering purchasing the Supra
FaxModem PB144+ (internal modem). Can anyone out there tell me
more about the 'voice' facility it has. I can't seem to get any
information or reviews anywhere.
Will it be an easy installation?

I heard that Applied Engineering's DataLink PB requires some
soldering onto the PowerBook's system board.

Dear Netters,
Sorry for these FAQs.
What is the difference between System 7 Pro and vanilla System 7.0?
Is it possible to run System 7 Pro
on a vanilla LC with 10 MB RAM, and less than 5 MB available
for Sytem Software space on the hard drive?
Curious as always.
Sincerely,

please do not send to my VAX account).

Subject: The Namer
Remember The Namer? Apple's Sys 6 utility for naming AppleTalk printers.
It won't rename AppleTalk ImageWriters if your computer is using Sys 7.x
because it can't find the device drivers (Obviously, it's not aware of the
the extensions folder).
Does anyone know how to rename AppleTalk ImageWriters from a Sys 7
computer? Believe it or not, I need to do this often.

Thomas Scott responds:
>Nah, just delete the AppleShare Prep file from your System Folder.
>That's the easiest way.
That only works if you continually remove the AppleShare Prep file.
The next person who clicks the auto-mount will reinstall that Prep
file. If you have RevRDist (or something similar) set to always
delete that file on startup or shutdown, this should work.
